A downloadable game

An ongoing project begun in January 2024 for TTRPG JAMuary!

https://itch.io/jam/ttrpgjamuary

But what is it about?

This a fantasy sports game set in a post-apocalyptic future inspired by Salute of the JuggerSpeedball 2, Blood Bowl and the traditional Aztec game tlachtli (though admittedly TSR's version as described in Gazetteer 10: The Orcs of Thar).

Though everything is up in the air (ha! like a ball!) at the moment, the starting intent is to focus on developing the following:

  • mechanics for "game" resolution
  • actually test and refine those mechanics
  • imply other RPG elements (exploration of a world, sandbox play)

How does it work?

The game engine I've decided to utilise as a chassis for the game's matches is DODECA by Peter Lattimore:

...but also keeping a close eye on how Peter's development of that engine in the heroic fantasy game Heroic Deeds continues to develop:

I've chosen this for the following reasons:

  • It's crunchy but not too crunchy- just right for a game that's about tactical decisions
  • Pete has put a lot of time into refining and developing the game, saving me a lot of legwork!
  • It uses D12s, objectively the best die... what's more, it uses D12 dice pools i.e. ALL THE D12S!

Why Publish Now? You've  barely even started, never mind finished!

I haven't committed to a proper itch.io jam in about 3 years, and I want to really contribute to the jam's sense of community and the platform more broadly: that means sharing my working, with devlogs and, more importantly, seeing this page as my "workstation" (ordinarily I would use my blog for such things)

So, here it is, then: the first devlog for Dogtown Drifters: AMA!

Is it a mere coincidence that I found your game/devlog on the same day as Rutger Hauer's birthday? Sweet mother of chance! Hope you can get it finished! Godspeed!
